Ladylike in burgundy

I saw an inspiration photo somewhere in the blogosphere last autumn where a woman was wearing purple jeans and a burgundy sweater (or the other way round) and that image stuck to my mind. I tried it in front of the mirror too, but I just didn't seem to own garments that had enough of a contrast in terms of hues. I'm not a big fan of dressing in the same color from head to toe, so a big enough contrast was the key to making it work. Well, a few days ago, I felt like wearing something different and just thought to hell with contrasts, I'm gonna try that burgundy and purple anyway. Black accessories brought some contrast though. The sideponytail is my go-to hairdo for second day curls.

I felt superfeminine in this outfit, it was probably the color scheme and the hair that did it. I really liked the outfit and I admire feminine style, but at the same time I felt a bit strange. Even though I wear high heels and love pretty things, inside I'm still that tomboy in hoodies from my teenage years and this amount of femininity was maybe a bit too much to feel like I completely owned it.

Mielenkiintoista viikkoa teille!

Fashion does generate some contradictory thoughts in me anyway. I really love to dress up, it cheers me up and I've always enjoyed aesthetics, but sometimes I catch myself thinking whether there's any sense in it all? To think about clothes so much, to always look for something new, to spend so much time on external things when it really is the internal things that count? But on the other hand, does everything need to make sense? If it feels good and brings joy, then go for it! And I wouldn't feel like myself in that hoodie anymore either. The style that I have now is definitely more me even though it might not tell a whole lot about what's inside my head. And it doesn't need to either, contradictions make life interesting. I wish you an interesting week!

Big smiles & grey jeans at golden hour

I personally like outfit photos where the blogger is smiling. Another person's smile cheers me up even through the screen. I smile a lot when taking outfit photos, but I'm rarely happy with my own teeth revealing smiles, so usually the photos that I end up publishing showcase less wide smiles. In the evening sunshine on Saturday I happened to pull off quite a few smiley shots and I think these photos have a very happy mood! Another thing lifting the mood was indeed the photographer's best friend; the sun shining just above the horizon. If there's something positive to say about the short winter days up north, it's the golden hour of perfect light that for once happens to be at a time when a homebody like me is out and about. Well, on those rare occasions when the sun even shines...

The clear skies also inspired me to wear something lighter. As I told you in my dream outfit post, I'm really drawn to light grey right now and when I finally found the jeans of the first dream outfit in my size, I couldn't resist buying them. For the accessories and the jacket, I had to go for black in lack of better options, but I think the ensemble stayed fresh enough anyway. I also tried whether I can still handle my flat iron that I haven't used in ages and made some curls for a change.

Khaki and pink – an unexpected color combo

The "I-don't-wanna-admit-it's-winter-so-I'll-just-keep-wearing-leather-jackets" theme continues. I wrote in the summer how some of the best combinations come about by chance and it was chance that brought my khaki jeans and pink fluffy cardigan together. I would have never thought to pair these two colors, but when I saw both garments lying on my bed side by side, I noticed how well this unexpected color combo actually works. Colors overall are what inspires me the most stylewise. Though I sometimes feel like dressing in grey and black – and sometimes I dress in them because I "have to", as for example colorful outerwear is hard to find – colors are definitely my thing. The unusual colors made me like this outfit so much that I wore it for a few days last week.

And yes, I finally found those khaki jeans I'd been looking for since last winter! They're from H&M, yet again, and I gotta say I've been very pleased with their jeans. A year ago I'd never owned a pair, but since then I've bought four! I love their skinny low cut, the legs are just narrow enough, the waist sits exactly where I want it to and the fit and the comfort are great.

To tie up the chunky cardigan, I used the detachable strap from my leopard print clutch as a belt. I usually try to avoid combining gold and silver in the same outfit, but this only thin black "belt" of mine simply was the best choice for this ensemble. Sometimes you just have to overlook these style "rules"!

Nimensä mukaisesti vihersmoothien avainainesosa on lehtivihreä. Omaan ostoskoriini päätyi lehtikaali, jota pakkausmuovissa supervihannekseksikin tituleerattiin.

Green smoothies have always had me intrigued. They're undoubtedly superhealthy, but at the same time I've been a bit vary, can they actually taste good? I decided to try it out and my aim was to come up with at least one delicious green smoothie.

The key ingredient in a green smoothie is chlorophyll. The green goodness that I ended up picking into my shopping cart was kale and it was even titled as a supervegetable in the plastic wrap it came in. I've bumped into the much hyped kale in a lot of health blogs. It includes a lot of protein, iron and calsium, vitamins a, c and k as well as carotenoids. Some others greens that I've heard are good for smoothies are spinach, celery and dark leaved lettuce like oak leaf lettuce.

I also finally bought some chia seeds. I don't buy a whole lot of foreign superfoods, but the chia seeds are something I've been very interested in. The antioxidant rich chia seeds have a lot of fiber, protein and omega-3 fatty acids in them. They form a gel-like texture when soaked in liquid. I've started adding them into most of my smoothies as I like the thick consistency that they bring. The little seeds in the smoothie also make me chew it more and I've read that it'd be good to actually chew your smoothies too, because then the nutrients will be absorbed better.

Sitten niihin kokeiluihin!

Now onto my experiments! My first try was quite a flop, it didn't have much of a taste, but still I had some trouble finishing the glass... After some trial and error, I came up with one green smoothie that I can say I really, really like and that will surely stay in my breakfast smoothie repertoire. Here's the recipe for it.

Vihreä mango-päärynäsmoothie (1 annos)
à la Style In A Coconutshell

kourallinen lehtikaalia
1 dl pakastemangoa
puolikas päärynä
kolmasosa banaani

Green mango-pear smoothie (1 glassfull)
à la Style In A Coconutshell

handful of kale
1 dl frozen mango
half a pear
1/3 banana
1,5 dl water or 1 dl water and 0,5 dl apple juice
----------------
a slice of avocado (~1/8)
1 tbsp chia seeds
a dab of honey
a pinch of ginger and a couple of leaves of lemon balm
1 tbsp coconut oil

You can make a smoothie with just the ingredients above the dotted line, but I've got the whole list in my glass. If you're a big fan of banana, you can use more of it. I leave the chia seeds to soak overnight, but even five minutes should be enough. The first of my successful experiments included a bit of apple juice, you can't go wrong with it really, but later on I left out the juice and threw in a bit of honey for sweetness. Ginger and lemon balm (I guess you could use mint too) add a bit of punch to the taste. Avocado and coconut oil bring some good fats and avocado is also great for that creamy texture.

Maistakaa, jos uskallatte! Perinteisemmät smoothiesuosikkini löydätte muuten tästä postauksesta.

I dare you to try it! You can also find my more traditional favorite smoothie recipes in this post.

Last of Rome outfits and a familiar view

Now that we've looked through my holiday snaps from Rome, it's time to get those last travel outfits out. This is how I usually looked when the weather was a little cooler, I guess you could say I was wearing the it-items of the summer. The denim shirt was the only long-sleeved top I had with me and I decided the skort would keep me warm well enough as there's some wool in the fabric, haha. Even the coolest temperatures were around 20 celcius degrees, so I don't think I was that underdressed with my bare legs. You could easily tell the tourists from the locals though, just by the length of their sleeves and pants.

These photos were taken at one of the lookout spots on the Gianicolo hill. The view was so very familiar to me, even though it was my first time in Rome, as I used to admire it in a painting by my grandaunt already as a little girl. When I was a child, I wanted to be an artist inspired by my grandaunt, creativity and aesthetics are in my blood.

Näitä kuvia katsellessa tuli todella haikea olo. Pääsisinpä taas käyttämään noita suosikkisandaaleitani...

Ihanaa viikonloppua!

And finally, here's an outfit that was quickly snapped on the streets of the Pigneto district. The zipper on the top part of the shirt actually belongs to the back, but I thought it looks much nicer in the front, so I've always worn this shirt backwards. Looking at these photos made me miss summer. I wish I could wear those favorite sandals of mine again...

Have a lovely weekend!

Last chance for leather jackets

A little moaning paid off and my outfit inspiration came flooding back. Maybe my new grey sweater helped some too as well as still braving the cold weather with a leather jacket. I love leather jackets and in my perfect world, the winter would be so mild that you could wear leather jackets all through it. Not gonna happen in Finland though.

The leather jacket needed a big scarf on top to keep me warm. I always admire scarves on others, but I seriously don't know how to use them myself. Or I use them so rarely (believe it or not, but I've always found them uncomfortable) that they completely slip under my radar in the shops and therefore I never buy them, so I don't really have many of them to wear and the circle is ready. They're so stunning and versatile as accessories though and I like how this outfit looks with the scarf, so it's a skill I definitely want to learn to master.

I finally found the grey basic sweater that I've been longing for and it's from H&M. Buying knitwear is so hard nowadays with the stores full of acrylic, which I try to avoid. The material blend in this one was pretty okay (83% cotton, 17% polyamide) and the fit and the cut were exactly what I want from a basic sweater, so I'm quite pleased. It was my first knitwear buy in over 18 months! Sounds quite extreme, but I just haven't found any that meet my standards in the meantime.

Rome off the beaten tracks

This Sunday we're jumping into the crammed tram to explore the Italian capital off the beaten track in part two of my Rome photostory. The first part covered all the essential sights and can be found here, but this second part is undoubtedly my own favorite.

The local public transport was an experience in itself, I'm not sure if there were any schedules and the buses, trams and metro were usually packed. But it didn't take long to get used to standing with no space to breath and it was funny to think of how in Finland you consider a bus full once all the seats have been occupoed...

The area around the university was almost eeriely quiet on a Sunday afternoon with no one around. The nearby San Lorenzo district on the other hand was really busy late into the night with loads of students out and about.

I thought about which part to include the district of Trastevere in and even though there were a fair share of tourists there, it's on the wrong side of the river so to say, so it ended up here with the areas less traveled. The best thing about the bohemian Trastereve were the charming old little streets and alleys.

Tiber-joen länsipuolella sijaitsee myös Gianicolon kukkula, jonka rinteeltä löytyi useampikin näköalapaikka kaupungin maisemien ihailuun.

The Gianicolo hill, with several spots to admire the view over the city, is also located on the western side of the Tiber river.

The are of Pigneto, southeast of the Termini station, was multicultural and the streets there were quite lively.

Looking through my photos I feel like I was really lazy with my camera as I saw so many interesting places of which I had no photos of. But you can't always photograph everything, can you? This is the end of my photo reportage of Rome from September 2013. Thank you for watching and reading and I hope you enjoyed this little virtual trip with me!

I wish you a lovely Sunday and as we're celebrating it in Finland today, a happy father's day to all the father's out there!
