Pukeutumisinspiraatio talvilomilla

Tyyliblogissa on nukuttu talviunta. Syykin on yksinkertainen, kaikenlainen pukeutumisinspiraatio tuntuu täällä päässä karanneen talvilomille.

Tämähän on oikeastaan aika ihanteellinen tilanne.

Toivottavasti teidän vuotenne on lähtenyt hyvin käyntiin! :)

As you might have noticed, this style blog has entered hibernation mode for the winter. There isn't any more drama to it than the fact that all of my style inspiration seems to have escaped. I wonder if it's gone somewhere warm? If so, I wouldn't mind chasing it to wherever it's holidaying at...

Every autumn everyone seems to get really excited about the colder season, with it's layers, and big soft jumpers, and whatnot. But I have a problem with winter wear and it's this:
Why are all winter clothes black, grey, plain and just uninspiring? And why do those winter clothes that aren't black, grey, plain and uninspiring, have to be made of acrylic, polyester or something else that I want to stay away from?

But on the other hand, I haven't even been very interested in clothes for the past few months. Which might be for the aforementioned reasons... I always enjoy beautiful things though, but wearing the same clothes often doesn't really take away their beauty, does it? Unless we're talking about those acrylic sweaters that pill on the first wash or even wear, eurgh.

It's so easy when you don't have to think about what to wear. Just wear the same thing day in, day out; jeans, cashemere sweater, camel coat, burgundy handbag and my trusty winter boots that have finally made a return after taking a break for one winter, because I was too lazy to bring them to the cobbler for new heel tips... And you know what? I still like what I see in the mirror. Without having spent any time or thought on it. Which is quite ideal actually. Why should we always be coming up with something new, if the current solution still works? And this is where I start to question the sense in this whole fashion thing, which happens every winter by the way. What a fashion blogger I am...

Though I'm not entirely convinced if it's only the lack of gorgeous winter clothes that has made me feel this way. I just naturally tend to turn inwards in the winter. Snuggle up at home where it's warm, get lost inside my head and my thoughts. And the external kinda loses it's meaning then. If only my mood wasn't so connected to the amount of light outside... When there's no sunshine for weeks on end, it tends to get very dark in my mind as well. It does work the other way round too, today we had the most beautiful sunshine all day long and it felt so much easier to breathe!

Luckily spring is just around the corner and hopefully I'll be blogging about colors, leather jackets and happy things soon enough! I'm not even really missing the clothes as much as the blogging... I hope your year has started off well! :)

Dressing up has felt super easy, fun and motivating for the past weeks and there's a clear reason for that. I finally found the perfect jeans, two of them actually!

Like I've told you a million times, I'm a denim girl at heart and so there isn't really any piece as important in my wardrobe as those perfect jeans. We're talking about those everyday jeans now, those that go with just about everything - the denim blue skinnies. And I've had a perfect denim blue skinny shaped hole in my wardrobe for the past couple of years which has at times nearly driven my nuts! But when you've got a clear vision of how perfection looks like in your head, it's not easy to find those perfect ones. Let's take a closer look at my requirements...

The perfect wash

The first thing I look at jeans is the wash and sometimes I think I must be the most picky person on earth when it comes to the wash of my jeans. Denim blue jeans should have a good wash, I don't like solid blue denim at all. The perfect naturally distressed look. Not those horrid horrid distinct patches that don't blend in at all, eurgh. I see lines that are way too clear even in otherwise really good looking jeans on the high street. And I just can't stand them! Also, the distressing on the thighs should not go too low below the knee as that visually shortens your leg. And I'm not a big fan of distressing on calves, if there must be some, then it better be very subtle.

The perfect color

Yup, that denim blue. But there's many variations of the denim blue. Light denim fits spring and summer, but the most versatile pairs are in mid to dark blue denim. The blue shouldn't be too bright either. Bright blue denim goes nicely with bright colors (like (kuten vaikka tässä), but with those soft, neutral, earthy shades, a more subdued blue is definitely in order. And that subdued blue goes with everything, even the brights! I quite like a slightly greenish shade of mid blue denim.

The perfect cut

Skinny, skinnier, skinniest. My previous favorite pair retired slowly, because it just wasn't skinny enough. Closer to straight than skinny actually. I live by the rule that the wider the leg opening, the longer the jeans should be. Bootcuts and flares should just skim the ground. So the benefit of really tight skinny legs is that you can wear them with any kind of shoes. They end at just the right point, so that they don't cover that pretty shoe and denim transfer to lighter shoes isn't an issue. With ankle boots, the hem slips perfectly into the shaft with no sloppy bunching above the boot. In addition to the skinny leg, I also look for a relatively low waist. High waisted jeans just don't flatter my body at all. I also like my pockets quite low, never hitting the thigh though.

The perfect fit

Tight! I always try to squeeze myself into the smallest size I possibly can, because jeans always stretch. There's nothing worse than an ill fitting pair of jeans, you always feel a bit sloppy and never truly confident if the fit isn't right. That's the reason I hestitate to wear my light denim jeans, cause they've started bagging below the bum. That extra fabric below the bum is my main fit issue in jeans. Maybe my booty just isn't bootilicious enough? Another requirement there is that the jeans wouldn't completely flatten my bottom. And the waist shouldn't be too tight either, love handles aren't a good look...

Ja täydelliset farkut löytyivät...

Mangosta!

Uptown-malliset farkut värissä dirty - matala vyötärö ja push-up leikkaus pepussa.

And I found my perfect jeans at...

Mango! I've seen loads of almost there jeans at Mango for a few years already and have almost purchased some, but every time there's been something a little off. The last time it was those too striking calf distressings... But at the end of August, I popped into Mango and ended up trying on a bunch of their new A/W collection jeans. And I was amazed to find so many good ones that I couldn't even decide which ones to get! So I did what I always do, slept on it and returned the next day with a clear idea of which two to buy.

The Uptown cut in the shade dirty - a low waist and a push up cut for that perfect booty. And my favorite thing is the perfect wash, with rather strong, but still natural distressing! And that perfect slightly greenish shade of darkish mid blue denim. Love, love, love! Jeans just don't get better than this!

For the second pair, I was considering the Olivia cut in either the shade soft denim or blueblack. Soft denim was like something between the Uptowns that I got and the blueblack Olivias, dark denim blue with slightly slightly more gentle distressing. A good basic pair. But I ended up going for the blueblack shade, which I believe will offer me more variation. Slightly higher waist than the Uptown, a dark blue denim with beautiful, subtle distressing. Perfect for those darker outfits and underneath black boots. Love these as well!

Farkut kustansivat muuten 39,95€ per pari, mikä on mielestäni ihan kohtuuhinta farkuista.

Phew, that was quite a lot of denim thoughts (congrats for making it to the end ;)), but I'm happy to finally get them off my chest. I've been meaning to write about them for so long, but just haven't gotten around to it before. But luckily this was perfect timing, cause instead of just venting, the story now had a happy ending. I thoroughly recommend checking out Mango if you're looking for a new pair of jeans! They were 39,95€ each, which I feel is very reasonable for quality denim.

My signature look + what's yours?

Into Mind lähestyy signature lookin määrittämistä mood boardin kautta, ilman oman olemassa olevan vaatekaapin asettamia suuntaviivoja.

Mikä on sinun signature lookisi?

It's been a while since I stumbled upon this very interesting blog about defining your style and building a functional and minimalistic wardrobe, called Into Mind. Unfortunately my online ADHD mind that's constantly jumping back and forth between a million tabs hasn't allowed me to dive deeper into it yet, but on my last visit there I came across the concept of signature style. It's pretty self-explainatory, but here's how Into Mind defines it:

"Your signature look (or uniform) is the flagship look of your own personal style. It should represent its core elements, the essence of your style, all in one outfit. Your signature look is the outfit people picture you wearing when they think of you, and your one and only look if you were a cartoon/fairytale/pixar character."

This is something that resonated with me straight away. But to encapsulate my style into one outfit seemed like mission impossible. Into Mind offers an in-depth guide into this, but again that online ADHD mind of mine... However, one morning recently as I was squeezing myself into my favorite pair of skinny jeans for about the millionth time in the past two weeks, wondering whether it'd be time to change it up, it hit me.

Maybe this is my signature look? In all it's simple and ordinary glory. Jeans, pumps and a tee or a blouse. Topped with a leather jacket or a blazer if needed. Voilá! And suddenly it all made sense...

I would even leave a little more room for my signature look than Into Mind does. For me it's just a certain silhouette and a certain balance in the colorscheme. Skinny jeans and a slightly loose, shortish top. Darker bottom, usually mid to dark blue washed denim, and a lighter top in a soft shade to not make me look even paler than usual. Always with a sprinkle of color, black usually only in accessories and leather items. High heeled pumps and fairly relaxed shoulder bag with minimal other accessories or jewellery.

I can hear my inner eccentric screaming for something extraordinary to add to my signature look. I also can't help thinking if I'm really that boring and unoriginal that my signature look is the same as just about every second person's? But I love it in jeans, pumps and a tee. I like what I see in the mirror and feel very comfy, so why not?

Of course your signature look evolves over time and with seasons too. In the winter I trade my pumps for boots, leather jackets for wool coats, t-shirts for jumpers. Having a signature look doesn't limit you to only that one outfit nor outfit concept, but gives your style a foundation and a frame. From which you can continue building a functional wardrobe and navigating through the endless waves of fashion.

Whereas Into Mind creates your signature look based on a mood board, I would simply ask the question: "What's the outfit you choose to wear on a I've-got-nothing-to-wear day when you just want to look very you while feeling comfortable and confident?" Though I'm sure it'd also be interesting to try the mood board approach to see if I'd end up with the same result or if I'd find something completely new about myself and my preferences!

What is your signature look?

Every now and then I toy with the idea of buying my clothes primarily from eBay. More second hand, less new. Flea markets and second hand stores aren't really my thing, I don't go regularly enough to find those gems. But with eBay, I love that you can browse from the comfort of your home, whenever you want and that you can actually search for something specific instead of going in and seeing what's available. And to clarify, when I talk about eBay, I mean buying from private sellers, not the cheap Asian eBay stores.

I've only bought so many clothes from eBay and mostly it's been pieces that I've regretted not buying when they were in stores. Like this Zara leather jacket and these Topshop boots, both of which I've worn to death once I found them - undeniably great buys! So it's great for finding specific items, but it's equally great for finding pieces you never even knew existed. I love how there's so much selection and you can find distinct, quality pieces for much cheaper than at the store. You just gotta be persistent and keep searching regularly as well as dare to take some risks.

There's always a risk involved when buying clothes without being able to try them on and feel them first. That's why I'm not a huge fan of shopping online and with eBay, you don't even have the option of returning. You also can never be sure of the integrity of the seller. Yes, PayPal will cover you in case you don't receive the item, but when the item isn't an described, it gets a little trickier. But despite the horror stories, most transactions are very smooth and I can't recall having any major issues myself. Living in Finland is a little inconvenient though, we don't have our own eBay (and our local equivalent to it has both poor selection and poor interface) and not all sellers ship overseas. And when they do, the postage can get quite high especially for shoes and heavier items.

But let's move on to those recent finds now!

Suosikkiavokkaani löysivät viimein kauan kadoksissa olleet kaksosensa!

My favorite pumps found their long lost twins! You might recognize the black pumps, they're my most comfortable pumps ever and they've appeared in many of my outfits. They're by Zara, from fall-winter 2008, and I still find the design impeccable and timeless. I often dream about owning the exact same shoe in all colors of the rainbow, that's how comfy they are. But unfortunately, they were only available in two colors, black and grey. I've been dreaming of the grey as well and have occasionally looked for them on eBay. And now they're finally mine! Hardly worn, genuine leather and 19,40€ shipped! They originally cost 70€ at Zara. They do feel a tad bigger than their black counterparts, despite the same size, but I'm confident they'll prove to be just as comfy regardless!

No, entäs tämä nahkableiseri?

No, yhtä kaikki, nappilöytö tämäkin! Seuraavassa postauksessa sitten asua bleiserin kera...

How about this leather blazer? Or leather jacket, but it's so thin and light that I totally plan on using it as a blazer indoors! As I wrote about my fascination with softer shades for the autumn, I also happened upon my old post about blue where I featured a greyish blue and cream leather jacket from Oasis. I decided to have a look at eBay in hopes of maybe finding the jacket, but instead I found this stunner! Also from the British brand Oasis, genuine leather and with a gorgeous drape collar. Love, love, love!

Last spring I saw a similar leather blazer at a local department store, Stockmann, and I tried it on quite a few times. I fell in love with the idea of a leather blazer as I've been missing a black blazer in my wardrobe, but most black blazer are dead boring. But that one wasn't a perfect fit and the price was too much anyway. But this one from eBay was a steal, £38 shipped, with a retail price of £140! And the fit is just perfect, yay! Though that said, I'm not 100% sure if it's black or grey, it was sold as black, but in some lights, it does look quite grey. But either way, to say I'm pleased is an understatement, that's how much I love it! You're gonna see it in action in the next post, so stay tuned...

These are the colors that I want in my life this autumn!

Yes, autumn has slowly creeped into my thoughts and I've been thinking about how I want to dress as the days gets chillier. The traditional burgundies, khakis and mustards as well as black leather certainly belong to this season. But in addition to those I've found myself longingly gazing at outfits consisting of somewhat softer and lighter shades. Like grey, beige, and the combinations of those two like greige, taupe and so on... Not to forget my old faves, dusty, greyish shades of lilac and rose, and why not blue as well.

But it's not like I've ever disliked those colors, so how come I don't have many of those shades in my wardrobe? Well, I'm not very strategic when it comes to shopping, despite thinking through every purchase carefully. I go to the store, browse and feel the clothes and buy whatever takes my fancy. My style and outfits then consist of all those random pieces I've collected. And as I love color, it's mostly the distinct colors that catch my eye and throughtout the years I've managed to accumulate a wardrobe that almost completely lacks those soft, dainty neutrals.

Still, without exception, it's those exact colors that I find myself craving for at some point of the colder season. Like last autumn with grey and last spring with beige. Recently I've even seen some very beautiful and harmonic grey and beige combos even though I've mostly avoided pairing the two myself.

This autumn I could actually make it a point to not succumb to those oh-so-appealing burgundies & co. and instead look a little closer at the lighter sections of the racks. A beige winter coat is especially high on my wishlist, as the post that I linked from last spring brought such vivid memories of how depressed choosing between a burgundy and a dark grey coat made me on those sunny early spring days.

What are the colors you'd like to wear this autumn?

Avainsana: rentous

Samalla olen taas erkaantunut hieman blogimaailmasta.

Kameraikävä on jo kova!

Rennolla asenteella kuitenkin jatketaan! Säärikarvat voisin tosin tänä iltana ajaa...

A small crossbody bag, sandals and a straw hat. There's a threesome that has been dominating my outfits for the past three weeks. The keyword for early summer has clearly been effortless.

The effortlessness hasn't only been limited to my style, in fact I've been even more effortless when it comes to the rest of my look. Yesterday in the car I was looking at the little stubble on my legs and convinced myself it isn't that visible. The eczema on my face is also making a comeback, but I haven't bothered to waste many thoughts on it. My hair has stayed in place even though I ran out of conditioner two weeks ago. Sometimes I have these phases when I just couldn't care less.

I always dress well though. Because dressing well doesn't take any more effort than dressing "poorly". We do wear clothes regardless, so why not wear some nice ones? Even if I don't have a new groundbreaking outfit idea in mind, it's easy to just pick an old favorite. Maybe that's also why style is my main area of interest when it comes to looks, otherwise I'm pretty low maintenance.

I've also distanced myself somewhat from the whole blog scene. Not intentionally, but when I browse my Bloglovin, I just keep clicking "mark as read" on all those brunch posts, self tanners, coffee machines, bag dreams and cocktail parties. I'm a bit tired of the blog cliches, especially as the more I think about it, the less they actually represent the life that I want to live. Sometimes I can't help but wonder how come this awkward nerd ever even found herself running a fashion blog?

I also haven't managed to replace my broken DSLR yet. My laptop broke a couple of weeks after the camera, so getting a new laptop took the top spot on my priority list. The prices of the Canon 650D/700D are skyhigh at the moment, so here's hoping there are some good promotions coming... I'm truly missing mine! Outfit photos just aren't the same without a decent camera and a wide aperture lens, which is a big shame considering how much I'd love to show you my summer outfits...

Anyway, #effortlessnessFTW! I might shave those legs tonight though...

5 questions I ask myself before purchasing

I ponder a lot upon my clothing purchases, sometimes even too much, I admit! I don't want to buy just for the sake of buying nor for the novelty factor, because I prefer to spend my money towards building a versatile and sustainable wardrobe. I think I've done pretty well in that regard. I thought I'd write a bit about my decision making process when it comes to buying clothes, in the form of five question that help me to eliminate most of those not-so-good purchases.

1.

1.
Did it immediately make me go "wow!" the moment I tried it on?

The most important thing about a garment is how it looks on you and how it makes you feel. I measure it by the first reaction I have when I see it on me. It's the pieces that make you go "wow, this looks amazing!" that you will feel the most confident in and that you will also wear the most. I wasn't sure at all about the this dress when I saw it on the hangar, but I loved it as soon as I put it on and two years on, it's still one of my favourite dresses.

2.

2.
Do I already own a garment that serves the same purpose?

I like variation and therefore I prefer to spend my money on garments that bring something new to my wardrobe and add new possibilities for pairings. If I already own a garment that serves the same purpose in an outfit, I'm unlikely to buy another similar one. Though this also depends on your style; if you wear a white blouse five days a week, then it might be useful to own a few different white blouses! I did see a couple of pretty pink basic knits during the winter, but I don't think they would have added anything extra to my outfits, because my old pink knit still works great for those.

3.

3.
Is this perfect or could I find a better version of it?

This is especially important with those "classics" that you can find year after year and every story has their own version! Is this actual garment the perfect take on it for me? Or is this just okay, but ideally I'd like a longer/shorter, looser/tighter, more detailed/very simple, different material, etc. When you hold out for the perfect version, you don't have to think of the what if's and whether the grass is greener in another version. I dreamed of a beige suede jacket for so long and almost ordered a faux suede one, but luckily I didn't. Later I found the jacket in the above photo and there's nothing in it that I'd like to change. I haven't had to look at beige suede jackets ever since.

4.

4.
Do I love the garment itself
or just the idea of owning a piece of the style or trend it portays?

You know that "must have"-garment that you'd rather find right now instead of next week? Or the one you've been lusting after for so long, but they seem to have completely disappeared from the face of the earth? In that situtation, it's so easy to make a bad purchase when you find something that's even sort of there. That's when you need to ask yourself whether it's really me, or are you just blinded by your love for the style or trend? A couple of summers ago I so desperately wanted colorful jeans. I couldn't find any until these pink ones came along and I bought them. You can't really see it in the photo, but they're a really bright, neon pink. Colorful, yes, but neon really isn't my thing. I knew it when I bought them, but refused to believe. I've worn the poor jeans once...

5.
Kumpaa todennäköisemmin harmittelen enemmän vuoden kuluttua;

On vaatteita, joiden ostamatta jättämistä harmittelen vuosienkin päästä.

5.
Which would I regret more in a year? The money I lost or the garment I didn't buy?

If I'm about to buy something pricey, and those purchases I'm always very unsure about, the last deciding factor for me is whether the one-off splurge would actually affect my finances in the long term? Or instead of the lost money, am I more likely to long after the one that got away, the perfect garment I didn't buy when I had the chance to? There are garments that I didn't buy and still regret it years later. Last autumn I considered this burgundy beauty for three weeks until I finally reached the conclusion that I'd regret it if I let it get away and I haven't regretted my expensive purchase one bit!

Mietin siis ostokseni aina monelta kantilta enkä tee hätiköityjä ostopäätöksiä vaan mieluummin nukun yön, tai muutamankin, yli. On hienoa tietää saaneensa rahalle vastinetta rakkaan luottovaatteen muodossa.

I always think my clothing purchases through and through and avoid making rushed decisions. It's great to know you've spent your money wisely and have gotten a trusty staple piece in return. On the other hand, despite all the reasoning, your instinct is not something to be forgotten, cause style really is all about how you feel! I've found that I usually know whether I should buy it or not as soon as I try it on. You know, from that instinctive "wow!" reaction I talked about. The rest is basically just convincing myself it's indeed the right decision or reminding myself to not buy if the "wow!" was missing!

Warming up to blue

Ehkä tämäkin on selitettävissä jollain lapsuuden traumalla, heh.

Nyt olen kuitenkin huomannut katselevani vanhaa inhokkiani ihan uudella mielenkiinnolla, jotenkin mystisesti se on alkanut kiehtoa. Tosin on sinistä ja on sinistä, eli kuten väreissä aina, sävyt merkkaavat vähintään yhtä paljon kuin pelkkä perusväri. Silmääni miellyttävät lähinnä syvä yönsininen - astetta tummempi klassisesta laivastonsinisestä - sekä seesteinen siniharmaa. Molemmissa väreissä on muuten kunnostautunut H&M, yönsinistä näyttää siellä olevan paljon tänä keväänä, siniharmaa taas taisi kuulua enemmänkin heidän viime syksyn väripalettiinsa. Kaikki allaolevan kollaasin tuotteet ovatkin Henkkamaukalta lukuunottamatta Oasiksen syysmalliston mielettömän upeaa nahkatakkia.

I don't think my love for colors has gone unnoticed by anyone. But despite being a total jeans girl, the color I've never been able to stand is blue. Not in any other form than denim. Just about every blue item that I own is pictured above, apart from a few pairs of jeans. Blue has always been a completely no-no for me. I don't even really know why, I've just found it kinda depressing and I do like warm colors more. That said, I remember that I actually did wear a dark blue hoodie a lot at school, back when I didn't care about clothes and just wanted to be invisible. Maybe the explanation lies in a childhood trauma after all, haha!

Now I've found myself surprisingly warming up to blue. It's like I'm looking at it with brand new eyes, I suddenly find it very intriguing. However there is blue and there is blue, basically as always with colors, the shade matters at least as much as the basic color. The shades that have caught my eye are rich midnight blue - a little darker than the classic navy - as well as calm greyish blue.

No, ehkä ei sentään, ainakaan jälkimmäisiin...

Blue lovers claim that it goes with almost any color. I'm surprisingly mostly drawn to the neutral combos of blue & black, blue & beige/cream and blue & brown. And why not try blue with dusty pink, dark purple or even bold gold?

If there's something I've learned about style, it's to never say never. So just wait till you see me in stripes and birkenstocks! Or maybe not, at least not the latter... But sometimes that u-turn happens at lightning speed and nowadays I wear many items that a few years ago I couldn't have imagined I would; the denim shirt and low heeled Acne-style booties to mention a couple. On the other hand, it's a nice feeling when your horizon broadens. It opens up new and exciting opportunities, but may also hurt your wallet... I haven't yet bought anything new in blue and I'm not even looking. But I also wouldn't automatically pass on something interesting just because it's blue, like I used to. A midnight blue blazer could be a nice addition.

Is there a color that you wouldn't be caught dead in?

Minulle tuli joulun tienoilla jonkinsortin muotiähky, koko muotijuttu meni vaan yli, alkoi ahdistaa.

I've been having all kinds of thoughts about fashion lately. I love fashion (or style, whatever you wanna call it), but at the same time I can't help having these contradictory thoughts about it. Sometimes I find myself questioning whether the whole thing is worth it at all? Fashion is a great hobby that adds joy to my everyday life, but where's the line where it just becomes too much?

I've been thinking about all the time that I spend browsing blog after blog and online store after online store on a daily basis, how easy it is to lose yourself in that world and how much it affects your thinking. Yes, it's a lot of fun and honestly, I'm all about things that are fun, but how little do you actually get in return? Dreams and mental images, a little getaway from reality into a world where everything is as beautiful as it seems. Dreams about beauty that only create new "needs" and wants as soon as the previous ones are fulfilled. Unrealistic images of how life would probably feel better with a pair of Louboutins on your feet. Any smart adult would know that it's not true, but why do we still find ourselves thinking that the desired object x would somehow improve our life?

I want to dress well, but I want it to come more naturally. I want a more relaxed attitude towards the whole thing. Even though fashion is always present, in the way that we dress and the way that others dress, I don't want it to take over so much of my thoughts. I'd rather have other eureka moments than just "yes, that's exactly the kind of booties that I want!" I don't like how often I find myself thinking about clothes in totally unrelated situations. It very much correlates with how much time I'm spending online looking at fashion and the more you spend time doing exactly that, the less you even question it.

Around christmas I started suffering from a bit of a fashion overdose, it all just got too much and made me feel very uneasy. Not dressing up in itself, the aesthetics of it, but rather everything around it. Buying, consumerism, materialism, vanity, how easily the fashion world creates all these needs and how much energy can we spend on things that don't actually matter that much and don't bring us any closer to lasting happiness.

It's also got me thinking about the blogosphere, or more like the whole fashion and lifestyle genre of social media. With services like Instagram and Pinterest, the emphasis has moved onto images. This beautiful, but very homogeneous, endless stream of images is so easy and addictive that it hardly leaves any time for other, more constructive hobbies. And I'm not talking about following politics, or other "serious" things, they're a whole different subject that I don't want to delve into here, but all those other fun things that really make us feel good and aren't all about the external.

Does anyone bother read things anymore? To read long articles that make you think? I notice it myself that diving into a long article feels like a chore sometimes even though I know I enjoy good writing at least just as much as good photos. And what happened to text in fashion blogs? I'm always curious to hear what you thought while constructing your outfit, why you chose to buy that particular piece, what intrigues you in this trend. Not to mention deeper, thoughtful posts. I love text that makes me think. Blogs that inspire me to be a better person and not only crave for material things.

January was almost a fashion free month for me, I just couldn't care less about shops and blogs. Even though I've already found my way back, a little break was good for me, it did clear my thoughts a bit. I still want to dress well, have my style be beautiful, fun, individual. I still want to enjoy beautiful things, read blogs and hopefully bring a little bit of beauty into someone else's life with my blog. But I want to spend less time in all this aimless browsing and scrolling, to think less about the external, to buy less, to want less material. And I want to spend the time that I'll save by doing so in finding inspiration outside of clothes. To read those articles that challenge my thinking. To feed my internal world more than the external. Because happiness comes from inside. The external isn't all meaningless either, but true happiness can only be found inside yourself, not from material things or how the outside world sees you. Beautiful frames don't make a beautiful life, not even a beautiful person.

Things that I've always known, but tend to get a bit sidetracked from in my daily life. That's why it's good to write them down, like a reminder to myself. I've got so many thoughts on this subject that it was about time to get some of it out of my system. And if this sparked any thoughts in you, then I'd absolutely love to read them in the comments section!

Recent stylespottings

Even though my own inspiration for outfits has been lacking lately, it hasn't stopped me from enjoying the style of those who haven't let winter stop them from dressing up. I've seen a couple of gorgeous outfits this winter that have really stuck in my mind and I thought I'd share them with you. I actually rarely remember outfits I've seen on the streets and while these looks aren't really my style, there was just that special something about them.

I saw this outfit just a couple of days ago, I think it was on Tuesday. In the gloomy weather, something minty caught my eye. A mint green jacket just doesn't go unnoticed in the middle of winter. Apart from the jacket, the girl was in all black, I think she might have even had black hair. I only saw her very briefly from the car window, so half of the outfit might be just my imagination... But I clearly remember the short, mint green jacket, a hat, a voluminous skirt and a sweater slightly longer than the jacket. I think the jacket was a suede biker jacket, but my new mint suede biker jacket that I found from the sales might have something to do with that association. It's not exactly suede jacket weather at the moment...

The outfit was both dramatic and girly at the same time. The wide-hemmed miniskirt made for an hourglass silhouette, and paired with black tights and presumably high heeled shoes, it made her legs look endlessly long. And how great was it to see some color for a change! Well, something else than the traditional dark winter colors. Mint green with black looked absolutely delicious and made me think of liquorice with mint filling.

Beige and black, could it get any more boring? But this outfit I saw was anything but boring! A soft and cosy looking beige shearling jacket and matching suede boots that I think had a zip on the outside, paired with black skinnies and a loose white top. The outfit looked relaxed and comfy, but still so pretty in all it's simplicity.

A note-worthy detail was that the top was slightly longer than the jacket, and the hem of the shirt looked super nice as it playfully floated with her movements. Around the same time I actually saw another young woman whose outfit didn't make a lasting impression except for the floaty hem of her sweater. I remember thinking to myself if she actually knew how good the movement of the the hem looked? I doubt it, I certainly haven't got a clue on how my clothes move as I'm walking... And five years ago I would've a thought that your top should always be shorter than your coat!

I feel like it's mostly these kinds of relaxed and effortless fashionistas that catch my eye when I'm out and about. Outfits that don't look like they're trying too much, but that just work. Which is quite funny, cause in blogs it's pretty much the opposite, that's where I prefer the flashier outfits. I actually wrote about this same subject in the summer in my previous, and first, stylewatching post. However, this effortless chic is something I want to learn to master too!

Rillirouskun pohdintoja

Kuka on tuo nuori tyttö?

This week I spent almost a full day without my glasses. I was nearly blind. One of the temples just broke, needless to say I was majorly pissed off, the glasses were only two years old! Luckily I found an optician who was able to fix it the next day, but as I spent the day well into the afternoon without them, I couldn't help but reflect my thoughts on those things that are pretty much stuck to my nose.

When I got my first pair of glasses at the age of 13, or actually when I got the inevitable prescription for them, my first reaction was that I need to get contact lenses. No way I'll be seen in a pair of goggles! But I got the goggles anyway, it's not like I needed to wear them all the time, only occasionally to see to the board at school.

I still vividly remember the first time as I embarassedly took the glasses out of their case during class. I'd ended up with purple frames with the help of this young male optician that really seemed to know to his stuff, and I was most nervous about the reaction that such a bold color will get. To be fair, that purple was anything but bold. But back then I wasn't interested in my looks, my "style" was to be as invisible as possible, so any kind of purple felt very bold. I don't think anyone really paid any attention though.

As time went by, the glasses started to spend more time on my nose than in the case and by the end of junior high school, I'd become a full time spectacle wearer. And to this day, I've been one.

However, I've always felt that I'm more me without the glasses. When I look in the mirror at home, I look more like myself without the glasses.

That's also why I've ended up with discreet and not very overpowering frames. Before my last change of glasses, I was dreaming of thicker, bolder frames, because of how fabulous they look on others! But as I was trying on different frames, I started to lean towards the discreet ones. I don't want my face to scream "glasses!", they've always just been an obligatory nuisance for me.

I've dreamed of laser eye surgery to get rid of them, but unfortunately my sight doesn't seem to stop worsening, so the surgery is still out of question. Perhaps I'd finally need to get those contact lenses though, those that Ive been meaning to get for the last 13 years... I just feel more free and comfortable without glasses, which is why I take them off every chance I get. And that's not often, cause unfortunately my sight is really bad. And strong minus lenses also make your eyes look smaller and distort the whole area around the eyes.

As I took profile photos for this blog last summer, I also decided to take a few without the glasses. What if I'd want to appear without glasses in the blog? Would anyone be interested in a fashion blogger with goggles anyway? I guess that's how deep ingraned the thought of a woman always being more beautiful without glasses is in me, although I don't admit to thinking that about anyone else. I took a look at the photos and I was quite taken aback by how unfamiliar I looked without my glasses. Who is that young girl? What if I actually do look more like myself with my glasses on?

That thought kept playing in my head on Thursday as I had to go without glasses due to the unfortunate circumstances. Every time I saw myself in the mirror (well, the little that I could see), I kept wondering about how bland and hollow I looked. Like straight out of bed. Truth be told, that's how I am most of the time anyway. But even without a trace of make-up and my hair in the shape it's happened to air dry to, the glasses do help a lot. They frame the face, give it more definition, hide the dark circles by some miracle, keep the open hair mostly away from the face and make the whole look somehow more grown-up, in a good way.

Amazingly, I feel as though I've finally learned to love the way I look in glasses!

Ladylike in burgundy

I saw an inspiration photo somewhere in the blogosphere last autumn where a woman was wearing purple jeans and a burgundy sweater (or the other way round) and that image stuck to my mind. I tried it in front of the mirror too, but I just didn't seem to own garments that had enough of a contrast in terms of hues. I'm not a big fan of dressing in the same color from head to toe, so a big enough contrast was the key to making it work. Well, a few days ago, I felt like wearing something different and just thought to hell with contrasts, I'm gonna try that burgundy and purple anyway. Black accessories brought some contrast though. The sideponytail is my go-to hairdo for second day curls.

I felt superfeminine in this outfit, it was probably the color scheme and the hair that did it. I really liked the outfit and I admire feminine style, but at the same time I felt a bit strange. Even though I wear high heels and love pretty things, inside I'm still that tomboy in hoodies from my teenage years and this amount of femininity was maybe a bit too much to feel like I completely owned it.

Mielenkiintoista viikkoa teille!

Fashion does generate some contradictory thoughts in me anyway. I really love to dress up, it cheers me up and I've always enjoyed aesthetics, but sometimes I catch myself thinking whether there's any sense in it all? To think about clothes so much, to always look for something new, to spend so much time on external things when it really is the internal things that count? But on the other hand, does everything need to make sense? If it feels good and brings joy, then go for it! And I wouldn't feel like myself in that hoodie anymore either. The style that I have now is definitely more me even though it might not tell a whole lot about what's inside my head. And it doesn't need to either, contradictions make life interesting. I wish you an interesting week!

Farewell to summer shoes

I recently re-organized my shoes for the upcoming season. I pushed the summer shoes – sandals, ballerinas and pumps – to the back for the boots and booties to take over the front, leaving a couple of pairs of dark pumps within reach too, just in case. As I peeked into shoe box after shoe box, I started to feel blue. I found so many beautiful pairs that I didn't wear even nearly enough during the summer. The navy pumps in the first photo, with the flirty bow at the back, were bought from the sales in January and all winter I dreamed of wearing them. I wore them once. As for the stunning colorblock ballerinas below, I wore them a couple of times early summer, but after June I completely forgot about them. And there's many more. Summer is just so short and you get too accustomed to wearing the same favorites over and over again. And of course you usually pick the pair that you know definitely won't cause any blisters or discomfort as pumps too often tend to do...

I couldn't help making some calculations and I came into the conclusion that I've managed to build a shoe collection of which 80% of can only be worn for 35% of the year. Oops, that doesn't sound quite right. From this we can only make the following observations; a) the Finnish summer is way too short and b) wintershoes are so boring that I only buy them when I must. Well, I've never doubted the a-point, but what about b? Indeed, why do winter shoes never make my heart skip a beat like their summery cousins do? I know. It's the lack of color and usually a somewhat clumsier silhouette. Not that I'd dare to risk ruining my shoes by wearing much else than black calf leather when there's sleet or snow on the ground. I can only longingly gaze at this vibrant bunch and prepare myself for the long dark period where the shoes to choose from are black, black and black.

Hei hei ihanat kesäkenkäni, tervemenoa talviunille ja nähdään taas toukokuussa! *snif*

Goodbye my lovely summer shoes, have a good rest and see you again in May! *sigh*

Thoughts on trends and sweatshirts

A few weeks ago as I was checking out the fall styles at H&M, I spontaneously grabbed a couple of sweatshirts with lace on the neckline to the fitting room. I was actually relieved when I didn't like the way they looked on me, I've not really been feeling the whole sweatshirt trend. But there's still something intruguing about it, otherwise I would have just passed those sweatshirts without a second look. A week ago at the same store I tried on another sweatshirt, this time with beaded embroidery. And surprisingly the damn thing actually looked really nice on! I still left it at the store, at least for now...

This got me thinking about trends and how I feel quite torn about them. Consciously buying a garment to only wear it for one season or even just once feels very foreign to me. I hope and I think that it isn't very common, but I've certainly come across that way of thinking. Even though I don't buy those safe classics myself, every time I make a purchase I always consider whether I still want to wear it with joy a few years down the line. I just couldn't buy anything thinking that here's a nice, trendy garment for the season that I can sell or donate when I get bored of it... I'm also completely useless at getting rid of anything, but don't want any extra stuff around me either, so it's easier for me to make the strict elimination at the store.

So could I buy something that would have been a definite no a year ago, but that I suddenly feel very attracted to? Would I still want to wear such garment in a year or two? My style has evolved into a more experimental and bold direction in the last few years and as I get older (is it already okay to say so at 26?), I've started to not take my style that seriously anymore. There's no right or wrong, whatever feels right is right. So maybe the garment could work in my wardrobe even when the fashion world has moved on? And though sometimes I may fall for things very fast, falling out doesn't happen as fast, so once I like something, I'll probably like it for a long time.

Everyone that follows fashion already knows the first two sweatshirts in the picture, that's how immensely popular Kenzo's tiger and Karssen's Crème De La Crème have become. I haven't really warmed up to them and I can't help thinking what will happen to those brand-screaming print sweatshirts as the trend wears off, will they still be worn in a few years? The third shirt is the latest one I tried on at H&M. The slightly purplish grey and a bit of bling are very me and I'd like them in any shirt. Maybe the thing about it is indeed the color and the embroidery and those happening to come in a the trendy sweatshirt package is just a bonus. Luckily I rarely feel the need to buy anything just now, so I can play the waiting game and see if the sweatshirt will keep on calling my name.
