Goodbye 2013, welcome 2014!

2013 is soon over and 2014 is waiting just around the corner. I'm gonna spend the evening relaxing at home and looking at the fireworks from my windows. No parties, no glitter dresses, but exactly as I prefer to spend such an evening...

New year's eve always feels like a sad moment for me. Whereas it should be about celebrating and welcoming the new, I just keep thinking about how another year has passed by so quick, how I'm a year older and still as lost as before... It's like these same thoughts have haunted me on new year's eve for at least a decade. But maybe one year from now I can look back at how great 2014 was and how the pieces all started coming together?

2013 wasn't a bad year though. I finally had the courage to start blogging, which was something I'd dreamed of for a long time. I traveled too, for a couple of trips abroad and even though I didn't remember it straight away, I even visited a new country (so what if it was as tiny as Vatican?). The summertime was absolutely lovely, but isn't summer always? Two weeks of outdoor living at a summer cottage as well as a week of tranquility in the north were really good for the soul. And when I wasn't hiding in the forest, I also spent a two lovely evenings and afternoons celebrating my friend's hen night and wedding. And of course there's also those memories that I don't want to share to publicly.

In the new year, I hope to dream a lot, be inspired, get some new ideas and have more courage. I wish the same to you and may the year 2014 bring you everything you dare to wish for!

Christmas in shiny red

Asu!

An outfit! She's actually posting an outfit after all this time! Well, it isn't actually more than two weeks since the last outfit, which isn't long for a slow person like me, but which is just about eternity in the blogging world. I hope you're not completely fed up with christmas yet, cause this is indeed my christmas outfit!

I'm not a big fan of getting a new dress for every celebration and that's why I pretty much never buy any festive dresses, I don't really go to parties anyway... But this dress I originally saw on Wendy's Lookbook and was surprised to notice it actually is from ASOS. I loved the sheen of the dress as well as the drop waist cut. Onto the saved list it went and when I realised I do indeed have one christmassy event, that I'd like to dress up for, coming up, I ordered it after a few days of pondering and with a perfectly timed -20% discount code (from the already reduced price!).

Ordering abroad without the chance of free returns always makes a bit nervous and when the dress arrived, I did consider sending it back for a couple of days. In my vision, it had this lovely and warm gold sheen like in Wendy's photos, but in reality the sheen was more of a cold silver. Luckily I decided to keep it anyway, cause I'm absolutely loving it right now! And I didn't even remember the whole sheen "issue" before I looked at Wendy's post again when linking it here. I've already worn the dress twice with these boots and on christmas eve the outfit was exactly the same except for wearing some christmas-red soles indoors, in the form of my Louboutins. I actually do like the outfit more with these boots though! The scarf was there as an obligatory warmer as I'm always cold...

No, onpahan ainakin kuusi.

But where are all the christmas trees hiding when you need them? I had a vision of how I wanted my christmas outfit photos to look like, me in the foreground (of course...) and a gorgeous christmas tree, from top to bottom, somewhat distant in the background with beautiful bokeh. But on Boxing Day we couldn't find a single christmas tree that would suit the description. The one I had on my mind had it's lights off! So we just had to do this one and though there wasn't necessarily anything wrong with the tree, the setting just made it impossible to get the photos I'd wanted... Maybe I should have just ditched the tree idea all along and tried a different location. Well, at least there is a tree. Maybe I'll try again next year with the same vision and maybe even the same dress!

Weihnachtsgrüße aus Deutschland

Jouluterveiset Saksasta!

Christmas greetings from Germany! Just before christmas I popped into Germany for a quick visit and with the christmas just behind us, it's about time to take peek at what the christmas preparations over there looked like, unless I want to tuck the photos away to wait for next christmas. The Germans really knew how to celebrate christmas with their christmas markets and grandiose trees and lights. Let's start from the small, but attractive harbour town of Rostock and their christmas fair in the old town.

Suomi-kojujakin löytyi melkein koko rivi. En edes tarkemmin katsonut mitä heillä oli myynnissä eikä näistä aamulla kojujen ollessa kiinni otetuista kuvista näe, mutta poro ja kontiot siellä ainakin edustivat maatamme.

There was almost a whole row of booths dedicaded to Finland. I didn't actually even check out what they were selling and you can't see in these morning photos as they're closed, but at least they had a reindeer and some bears representing our country.

Berliiniin minulla on vähän kummallinen suhde.

My relationship with Berlin is a bit strange. I love Germany and I've traveled there a lot, but the country's capital just doesn't do it for me, at all. It's soon five years since my first visit and I thought that maybe now on the second time, I'll start to get what the city is about, but still despite the christmas dressing, Berlin seemed gloomy, grey, cold, disjointed to me... I've only spent about four days there though, both trips combined, and I doubt this was my last visit. But now, let's look at the photos!

It wasn't hard to find a christmas market in Berlin either as there were many scattered around the city. The photos above are from Alexanderplatz in the east and below from Charlottenburg in the west.

The market hall in Moabit district was maybe the most interesting find this time around. The palm trees and christmas trees existed in harmony and there was even a cosy restaurant at one corner of the hall, from where you could do a bit of people watching. I only drank a Coke, but they were also offering food as well as beers from their own brewery.

Jouluinen kuvareportaasi on hyvä päättää Brandenburgin portille, josta löytyi kaupungin kaunein – ja varmaan myös kuvatuin – joulukuusi. Toivottavasti jaksoitte katsella joulukuviani, vaikka pyhät jo ohi ovatkin, ja vielä olisi yksi jouluasukin luvassa...

There just couldn't be a better ending to a christmas photo set than the Brandenburg gate with the most beautiful – and probably the most photographed – christmas tree in town. I hope you enjoyed my christmassy photos despite the actual christmas days being over, and I've still got one christmas outfit coming...

Hyvää joulua!

Baby be a giant,
let the world be small
- Robbie Williams, Go Gentle

With this adorable little bauble that was in our christmas tree last year and a lyric that suits it perfectly, I wish you a merry christmas! Christmas only comes once a year, so remember to enjoy, to unwind and to recharge.

The spirit of my christmas

Just one more sleep before christmas. At least in countries where we already celebrate christmas on christmas eve. December has gone by so fast and I feel like I haven't fully tuned in to christmas yet. Like I mentioned in the beginning of this month, I've only started loving christmas in the recent years. As a teenager, I thought christmas was just a big fuss that started way too early. Though I still do agree that christmas should be left for December... I'm also not a not a big fan of the fuss and the consumerism.

We haven't given presents for years in my family and all those gift ideas and wishlists I've been seeing in blogs and elsewhere during the last few weeks feel kinda odd and very distant. I don't think there's anything wrong with giving presents, the thought of surprise packages under the tree is quite exciting, but a giftless christmas just suits us. Why should adults be obliged to buy each other presents when no one really wants anything and the thought of extra stuff only causes distress?

What is my christmas made of then? Relaxing, unwinding, getting quiet and cosy, and spending time with my family. Of course it's also about the atmosphere, the smell of a christmas tree, the candles, the lights. But downtime and family is essentially the spirit of christmas for me. The moment when you all gather together to toast, sit down on the sofa in front of the tree to chat and slowly move to the dinner table with happy banter filling the air, that's what's best for me. When there's no rush, everyone is present and in a good mood. When you can just be and enjoy the warmth of the moment.

The whole christmas eve with decorating the tree with traditional Finnish christmas tv on the background is just lovely. When it gets quiet at night after dinner, I already feel a bit empty and sad; was that it for this year? But luckily it's all still in front of us and I'm loving the anticipation!

Hiding from the cold world

The title happens to fit the outfit as well as the blogger gone missing...

As the temperatures drop to minus degrees, I take out this handmade felt hat that I bought from Tallinn years ago. I'm still undecided whether the hat is a bit too over the top, but at least I can say it's the most complimented piece that I own and gets comments from even total strangers. Funnily enough, despite the hat being so distinctive, I feel like I'm hiding when I'm wearing it and that's exactly why I love it so much. I'm very introverted, so it's a beautiful feeling to put on this hat, lift the collar up high and pretend like I'm safe from the world around me.

The outfit is pretty much the same as this one from a couple of weeks back, just with different accessories. The scarf is hidden underneath the coat, those smooth-soled boots have been replaced with booties that have more grip, the belt is shinier and the leopard printed bag adds a little extra. I bought the bag from the sales four years ago and use it mostly during winter to spice things up when I feel like my outfits are just repeating themselves day after day.

Ihanaa viikonloppua kuitenkin!

The repeating outfits are also the main factor for my lack of blogging inspiration. I knew the winter was gonna be a difficult time for the blog and it definitely wasn't a coincidence that I started blogging in the summer! I'm sorry about the slow pace, but even if you don't hear from me for a while, I promise I haven't forgotten about my little corner on the interwebs, I'm just in my winter hibernation mode. I wish you a lovely weekend anyway!

Brown & khaki in the winter

The first outfit since early October where my black Cristelle & Co. go-to bag doesn't make an appearance! In the winter I use black accessories almost exclusively as they just happen to go best with the colors of my two winter coats (grey and burgundy) and I don't even own brown winter shoes any warmer than these. During the week, on one of those "I've-got-nothing-to-wear" days, I was thinking what I could wear with my khaki jeans when I remembered that my cognac accessories do in fact still exist during the winter and with no snow on the ground yet, I don't even have to worry about staining lighter colored shoes. I for one am definitely happy about the lack of snow.

Khaki and brown are an excellent combination and I chose to go with eartly colors and a little pop of yellow. It was also nice to notice that all of the pieces in the outfit, except the jeans, are over three years old. I think this blazer was one of the first garments where I noticed how much character little details can brings, like the elbow patches and contrast collar in this one.

This week I've been feeling a bit empty, like I've got nothing to give, to the blog nor in general. It might be the winter, who knows. Tonight I'm planning to hang the first christmas decorations on the window next to my desk, maybe that'll cheer me up! I've only started to find my inner christmas fanatic in the recent years and though I rarely get into that full-on christmas mood before the week leading up to christmas, I love the warmth that the lights and the decorations bring to the season.
